Maryam: 'Terrorist' party barred from electoral symbol; PML-N starts campaign

Terrorist' party electoral symbol

PML-N Chief Organiser Maryam Nawaz, referencing the PTI, asserted on Monday that a "terrorist party" should not receive an electoral symbol, as her party initiated its election campaign in Okara. The delayed release of PML-N's manifesto for the February 8 general elections resulted from extensive deliberations within over 30 sub-committees over the past two months.

Nawaz Sharif, the PML-N leader, aimed to dispel the impression of his party being labeled as the establishment's 'favorite' during the election campaign. The delay in the campaign launch was primarily attributed to prolonged discussions within the PML-N regarding ticket distribution and seat adjustments with the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP) and PML-Q.

Addressing supporters in Okara, Maryam, without directly mentioning the PTI, emphasized that while a "sher" (tiger) could be allotted to a "sher," a terrorist party should not be granted an election symbol like other political parties.

“You claim your electoral symbol was the ‘bat,’ but in reality, it was the danda [baton] in your hands. The danda that you wielded against the state of Pakistan and its people,” asserted Maryam.

Her comments followed the recent removal of PTI's iconic electoral symbol, the 'bat.' The Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan's decision to revoke the symbol and reject the party's internal election just days before the polls after marathon hearings over the weekend.

Maryam commented on the PTI's predicament, stating, “Today, the PTI is facing the consequences of its own actions." She emphasized the presence of a danda, not a bat, in their hands during attacks on military installations. Maryam suggested that the PTI's electoral symbol should be indicative of their actions, such as the stolen watch or the petrol bomb used against the police.

The PML-N leader asserted that the nation would not allow a political party to manipulate internal elections without facing consequences. Referring to Imran Khan without naming him directly, she mentioned his past privileges, saying, "He was used to being a ladla [blue-eyed], getting bails, and facilitation. But neither the facilitation nor the facilitators remain."

Maryam warned that those times are over, and now only the law and the nation would determine the outcomes. Responding to Imran Khan's accusations about Nawaz playing the match "with the umpires of choice," Maryam claimed Nawaz's "real umpire" was the public, which would bring him back to power.

She urged people to vote for Nawaz Sharif, promising good education, cheap electricity, women empowerment, and an improved standard of living if the PML-N emerged victorious in the upcoming polls.

Maryam clarified that the PML-N did not seek revenge and asserted that they would work not only before elections but also after them, differentiating themselves from other political parties.
