Indian gymnast Pranati Nayak clinched the bronze medal in the women's vault event at the FIG Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup held in Cairo, Egypt on Saturday. Making her comeback to international competition after five years, fellow Indian Dipa Karmakar secured the fifth spot, as reported by Olympics.com.
This Cairo meet marks the kickoff of the 2024 FIG Apparatus World Cup series, comprising four distinct tournaments. The subsequent legs will take place in Cottbus, Germany (February 22 to 25), Baku, Azerbaijan (March 7 to 10), and Doha, Qatar (April 17 to 20). These events serve as crucial qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Qualification to the Olympics is determined by the top three performances out of the four qualifying events. The two highest-ranked gymnasts per gender for each apparatus, who haven't previously qualified, will earn Olympic quotas.
Pranati advanced to the vault final after finishing seventh in the qualification round with a score of 13.166. In the medal round, she secured the bronze with an improved score of 13.620. An Chang-Ok from North Korea claimed the gold with a score of 14.230, while Bulgaria's Valentina Georgieva took silver with the same score as Pranati, edging her out on technicality.
Dipa also reached the medal round but finished fifth with a score of 13.380. She had placed third in the qualification round with 13.449 points. Only the top eight athletes from the qualification round advanced to the final.
Pranati's victory makes her the third Indian to medal in the FIG World Cup series, following Aruna Reddy's bronze in vault at Melbourne 2018 and Dipa Karmakar's gold in vault at Mersin, along with a bronze at Cottbus in the same year.
In the men's events, India's Ujwal Naidu secured 58th and 40th positions in floor exercise and vault respectively. Tapan Mohanty finished 31st in rings and 38th in parallel bars, while Rakesh Patra earned a 20th place finish in rings.
