Indonesia Takes Lead Over New Zealand as Preferred Destination for Australian Travelers in 2023.
According to recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), 1.37 million Australians visited Indonesia last year, surpassing the 1.26 million who visited New Zealand.
Of those traveling to Indonesia, 86% went for leisure while 7% visited friends or relatives. Contrarily, for New Zealand, 43% were on holiday and 38% visited friends or relatives.
New Zealand had long held the top spot until early 2014 when Indonesia emerged as the runner-up, now claiming the lead.
Both countries experienced a tourism peak in 2019 before facing significant declines during the Covid-19 pandemic.
