Barely ten days prior, on July 25, another bombshell was dropped as news emerged of Hanyu's substantial contribution of 5,581,272 yen to the cherished Ice Rink Sendai, a beloved skating haven situated in the heart of Izumi Ward, Sendai City.

Elevating his longstanding association with the rink where he honed his skills to professional excellence, Hanyu's cumulative benefaction now stands at an impressive 8,733,406 yen. In light of surging electricity costs, Ice Rink Sendai recently disclosed a temporary reduction in its operations from July through August. Acknowledging the maestro's magnanimous gift, the rink's management conveyed their heartfelt appreciation, stating, "Ice Rink Sendai has always been a cherished part of the community, and the community's deep affection for the rink is evident. We are sincerely grateful for this gracious act. Yuzuru Hanyu's generosity resonates with his profound devotion to his hometown."

Having personally weathered the closure of the rink during his elementary school years, Hanyu holds a poignant understanding of the agony of being deprived of skating. The traumatic experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, witnessed Hanyu seeking refuge alongside a senior skater, fleeing the confines of Ice Rink Sendai. His family's abode in Sendai was tragically obliterated, leaving them huddled in a tiny two-tatami mat space within an evacuation shelter for four days.

Forced to depart his cherished hometown due to the rink's closure, Hanyu grappled with the haunting question, "Can I pursue my passion for skating in isolation?" Navigating a journey across various rinks nationwide, he relentlessly mastered complex maneuvers, including the awe-inspiring quadruple salchow.

In the subsequent year of 2012, as he transitioned his training base to the prestigious "Cricket Club" in Toronto, Canada, Hanyu was overwhelmed by emotion, shedding tears in front of close confidantes and kin, lamenting, "I am loath to part with Sendai."

While clinching Japan's inaugural men's gold medal at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2002 unleashed unprecedented jubilation within his beleaguered hometown, a subtle somberness marked Hanyu's demeanor.

Curiously, despite his golden triumph, why did Hanyu's visage lack its expected radiance? When questioned during a press conference following the competition, he disclosed, "Speaking about the disaster is challenging. I must contemplate how I could have contributed differently." His responses were imbued with an unmistakable seriousness. He then asserted, "Now, as a gold medalist, avenues open up for me to contribute to the recovery effort. Today marks the inception of that mission." His resolute determination to emerge as a beacon of hope for the regions impacted by the catastrophe was manifest.

Although Hanyu has maintained that his athletic commitments limit his direct involvement, he has consistently offered assistance where possible. A quintessential instance is his decision to direct all proceeds from his autobiography, titled "Blue Flame," published in that same year, towards supporting Ice Rink Sendai.

In January 2004, ahead of a momentous ice show in Morioka City, he embarked on a visit to the earthquake-stricken Otsuchi Town in Iwate Prefecture. Here, he engaged with locals who were grappling with the aftermath. This poignant experience birthed the creation of the program "Requiem of Heaven and Earth," a poignant expression of resilience against the backdrop of pain and sorrow. Through exquisite performances, he sought to convey strength and danced with poignant beauty.

With his transition to professional status in July last year, Hanyu initiated his tenure at Ice Rink Sendai. The arena bore witness as he glided through breathtaking routines, including "SEIMEI," captivating an audience of 88 media representatives hailing from 38 esteemed enterprises during the "SharePractice" open practice event on August 10.

A genuine sentiment courses through Hanyu's words as he reflects, "The privilege of practicing here remains profoundly special. While the array of instructors has diminished, the unique privilege of self-improvement within my cherished hometown still pervades. My aspiration to evolve here burns fervently, and my commitment to contribute to my beloved Sendai remains unwavering. It is my hope to walk in harmony with the people of Sendai."

This sentiment was shared post the open practice session, encapsulating Hanyu's spirit.

Significantly, Miyagi holds an indelible place in Hanyu's heart, as it was within its embrace that he navigated his inaugural year as a professional figure skater, precisely on March 11, 2011.

"The privilege of performing on such a momentous day as a professional figure skater is deeply meaningful. I am committed to embodying the emotions unique to this date, delivering sentiments only attainable on March 11," he expressed.

On the 12th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, spanning March 10-12, Hanyu undertook the mantle of a chairperson, hosting an ice show at the esteemed Sekisui Heim Super Arena in Miyagi Prefecture. Evoking memories of the starlit canopy that adorned the sky as his family embarked on their journey to an evacuation center, Hanyu christened the show "notte stellata," translating to "star-filled sky" in Italian. Through this chosen title, he aspired to cast a glimmer of hope akin to the stars that illuminated the disaster-stricken landscape on that fateful day, kindling smiles, albeit fleeting, across faces. The film's title, "notte stellata," aptly translates to "full of stars" in Italian. The merchandise sold on-site was predominantly disaster-preparedness oriented, with the intention of provoking contemplation on the topic of calamities. This is the unique influence of Hanyu.

Reflecting on his annual ritual of secret skating on March 11, Hanyu shared, "Each year, on this poignant date, I glide with unspoken prayers and heartfelt gratitude for the disaster. My sincere aspiration is that this show may kindle a spark of hope."

In a rare and touching moment, the skater conveyed his emotions to a captivated audience of 6,000 individuals.

With an unwavering allegiance to his beloved Sendai, Hanyu's journey upon the ice shall persist, an eternal testament to his profound devotion.
