Bank of Ghana's $250M Project: A National Scandal?
Bono Regional Chief Urges Government Scrutiny of $250 Million Bank of Ghana Project Spending
Osagyefo Agyemang Badu II Calls for Transparent Allocation of Funds for National Development
Sunyani, August 18, 2023 – Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, the eminent President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, has passionately appealed to the government for an inquiry into the Bank of Ghana's (BoG) substantial investment of $250 million in its new office complex.
In a resolute statement, Osagyefo Agyemang Badu II emphasized that the Bank of Ghana, while not operating autonomously, is dedicated to advancing the welfare of the Ghanaian populace. He underscored the incongruity of allocating such a considerable sum of money to a building project during a period of economic challenges in the nation.
Speaking eloquently at the inaugural assembly of the House in 2023, held on Thursday in Sunyani, the 'Dormaahene' proposed an innovative alternative. He put forth the notion that redistributing a portion of the $250 million, with each region receiving a minimum of $10 million, could significantly expedite comprehensive national progress. This strategic reallocation, he contended, could invigorate education, healthcare, agriculture, and pivotal national initiatives, thereby generating employment opportunities that would tackle Ghana's unemployment crisis and foster prosperity among its citizens.
Osagyefo Agyemang Badu II ardently urged the government to summon the Bank of Ghana's Board and Management to elucidate the rationale and necessity behind the $250 million project. His concern stemmed from the public's lingering doubts, signaling the importance of ensuring fiscal responsibility while promoting the overarching wellbeing of the nation.
Highlighting the indispensable role of the media, Osagyefo Agyemang Badu II called for elevated journalistic standards. He urged the nation's media practitioners to engage in impartial investigation and reporting of matters of public significance. Such diligence, he noted, would serve as a necessary check on those in positions of authority.
The assembly also celebrated the induction of new members into the House, specifically Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, the Paramount Chief of Wenchi Traditional Area, and Osabarima Asiedu Kotwi II, Paramount Chief of Kwatwoma Traditional Area, in the Jaman North District. This esteemed gathering of 19 members, including 17 paramount chiefs and two divisional chiefs, solidified their commitment to the betterment of their communities.
Guiding them through the oath-taking process, Justice Harry Acheampong-Opoku (Esq.), a distinguished High Court Judge in Sunyani, underscored the importance of adhering to legal principles. He encouraged members of the House to acquaint themselves with the Chieftaincy Act 2008, Act 759, as an essential tool for justly resolving disputes, mitigating contempt cases, and curbing chieftaincy conflicts in the region.
